Susan Treadwell is deputy director of the Open Society Initiative for Europe based in Barcelona, the regional office for Europe of the Open Society Foundations, where she oversees the foundation’s work on democratic participation and accountability. Prior to that, she was deputy director of the Open Society Foundations Human Rights and Governance Grants Program where for 10 years she developed expertise on supporting human rights and anti-corruption advocacy, civil society in the Western Balkans, and funding strategic public interest litigation. Korean by birth, American by culture and citizenship, and European by choice and in political values, Susan feels incredibly grateful to be living in Spain where people powered movements are leading the way in showing that complex systems can change.
